Bottle From the Spice Route

Mark Eliott 2009 (with the assistance of Marina Hyasat)

Artists Statement:

In search of ‘The Bottle Imp’ –reported by Robert Luis Stevenson in 1893, we cast our nets far and wide. For this wondrous yet treacherous creature - bearer of great fortunes and great ruin in equal measure who lives captive in a milk white bottle, we journeyed to many places. Trawling the oceans of the coast of Tahiti with the sting of salt spray on our faces and peering through the curtained windows of the grand houses of San Francisco - even scouring the dusty shelves of Nyonya shops in the streets of Malacca, we search but as yet in vain. Along the way however we have caught this handsome vessel in our net and we beseech you to take good care of it for it may well serve as lodgings for some wayfaring (but generous) Imp in future.

1+1 ≠ 2

Charlotte Bradley

Materials- mattress, steel and glass

One makes their own choice in the games and activities in which they participate but if a game is not played by the rules or the many different results of the game are not considered then things start to go wrong. When one enters into an activity it does not always end the way one expects. The usual is not always going to happen and the consideration of the other possibilities must be taken into account. 1+1 ≠ 2 explores the ideas of considering the preventative measures to make the game and activity safe. The activity being sex as a game of chance. This artwork is based on a child’s bead game. The game being an interactive activity turning it into an adult’s game relating to the contraceptives being used. The game involves what you do, the path you take and whether you will make it to the other end safely.

“Mangina” is a series that looks at gender roles in society. It questions men’s role in the world and the expectations that society places on men in today’s world of blurred guidelines. In this work I have used glass and steel. Steel is used to support glass in the world around us and is seen as the foundation to any construction using these materials. Steel is usually given masculine traits – “man of steel” While glass is fragile, glitzy. In my work the steel represents the feminine and the glass the masculine to challenge gender stereotypes.
